The Top Causes of Bad Breath and How to Prevent It

Medically known as halitosis, bad breath stems from poor dental hygiene habits or may be an indication of other health issues. Let’s look at the factors that contribute to a bad smelling mouth and ways to go about solving this problem.

To begin with, one of the obvious reasons why your breath reeks is the absence or inconsistency of teeth brushing. Furthermore, due to our daily food intake, it is important to remember that brushing one time a day is not sufficient. You should brush at least twice daily. If you can manage it after every meal or snack, it is even better.

Remember that in case of chronic bad breath, brushing and flossing aren’t enough. You will have to visit a dentist to find the right solution to the problem.

If you are on a diet, your protein intake may be high whereas carbohydrate intake low. Although this is a great way to diet, it can consequently lead to bad breath. The solution to this problem is simple: lower your intake of foods that are high in protein.

Garlic and onions are common examples of foods with strong stenches that cling to the breath for a long time. Cut down on such foods, especially before important meetings.

A dry mouth is prone to stink. This is because it needs moisture to eliminate any bacteria that might get caught inside. A dry mouth acts as a breeding ground for the bacteria where they spread wildly. Sip on water daily, ideally 8 glasses, to keep the body hydrated and the mouth free of any food particles and bacteria that may remain inside only to create problems in the future.

Pay close attention to your oral hygiene, visit your dentist regularly, avoid smoking, and drink plenty of water for fresh smelling breath.
