A 5-Step Guide to Dental Flossing

If you want a dazzling smile, brushing your teeth is not enough. Dental flossing is an essential part of a good oral hygiene routine that guarantees bright and healthy teeth. It is hard to get rid of plaque and food particles stuck between the teeth, with a toothbrush alone. Floss reaches places a brush cannot. If you do not floss at least once a day, the hard to reach plaque can harden into tartar and can serve as a safe haven for disease causing bacteria. Many different types of floss are available in the market that makes flossing easy and pleasant. BY following a simple 5-step dentist guide to dental flossing, you can ensure problem free teeth.

Dentist Guide Step-1: Get the Floss

Break-off a piece of floss about 18 to 24 inches long. Wrap the floss around your middle fingers to get a safe and strong grip. Make sure to leave around 3 to 4 inches of floss unwrapped. Make sure the floss is not wrapped too tightly as it could affect the blood supply to your fingers.

Dentist Guide Step-2: Hold it Together

Hold the exposed part of the floss between your thumb and forefingers. Try not to pull or stretch the piece of floss. Make sure to hold the floss gently yet securely.

Dentist Guide Step-3: Smooth Motion

Holding the floss firmly between your thumb and forefinger, slide the floss between your teeth. Move it gently up-and-down, and try not to break the floss.

Dentist Guide Step-4: Get to the Gums

Gently move down the tooth until you reach the gum line. Now curve it into a C shape and let it dip below the gum line. Move it up and down to reach the contours of each tooth. To better get rid of the plaque move the flask back and forth. To remove the floss, gently move the floss up and away from the teeth.

Dentist Guide Step-5: Repeat

It is important to clean every tooth individually. You have plenty of floss wrapped around your middle fingers. Make sure to use it. Use a clean piece of floss for every tooth and make sure to dispose the entire piece of floss after you are done, as it is not reusable.

This 5-step guide to dental flossing can help you floss your teeth effectively. If you have any confusion, do not forget to discuss it with your dentist on the next visit.
