When the dental pulp of a tooth has been injured, endodontic (root canal) treatment can help prevent the loss of the tooth. Treatment usually requires from one to three appointments.
Treatment
Treatment consists of carefully removing the contents of the root canals through a small opening in the tooth and replacing it with a sealed dental material. A temporary filing may be placed in the opening of the tooth between visits. Be gentle on the tooth while eating until the final restoration is placed.
Taming Sensitivity
It is possible to experience some sensitivity in
the tooth after any one of the dental appointments for endodontic
treatment. If extreme sensitivity persists after the first
several days, please call our office or the endodontist’s
office. You may be given prescriptions for antibiotics and
pain pills. Please follow the directions on the container.
Restoring the Tooth
After endodontic treatment has been completed on
a tooth, a crown is recommended to protect the tooth from
fracture. If the tooth has an existing crown, the small opening
is restored with an appropriate dental restoration; or in
some cases a new crown is needed.
